Faucets are an important part if the home. This is because they are used for dispensing water hence the importance of ensuring they are in the right working condition. A variety of problems may occur on the faucet range from noises to leaks. One is sometimes forced to replace the whole faucet. A leaky faucet could result to wastage of about 3,000 gallons of water each year. This water is capable of filling up about 60 bathtubs. One of the major causes of a leaking faucet is the washer. Here are tips of how to fix leaky faucet.

Washers found in the bathtubs are usually made of rubber or plastic. Frequent contact of the washers with water causes them to crack and dry making it difficult to maintain a tight seal. This eventually causes leakage. In order to fix leaky faucet short term, it is advisable to tighten the seal. However this creates excess pressure on the old washer and cause the faucet to wear out even faster. The best solution long-term will involve replacing the washer.

Shut off supply of water.

For efficient replacement of the washer, it is crucial to get rid of the handles. Pry off the inserts found in the handle using a pocket knife. The inserts are usually coverings found in the handles. They have cold and hot symbols on them and are made of plastic. After removing the inserts, you will be able to locate a screw on each of the handles. After removing the screws, this makes it easier to disconnect the stems from the handles. This is the hardest task as corrosion could cause the stem and handles to stick on each other. One could use a handle puller if unable to dismantle them on your own. Whichever the method one uses to remove the handles, one should not apply force as this could cause damage on the faucet. In case the handle puller does not work, seek help from a professional plumber.

Replacing the washer.

Make use of a screwdriver to disconnect the seat washer screws form the stems. This makes it possible to remove the old washer. One could do with the help of a pocket knife for prying off in some instances. After this, replace the washer and seat washer screws with new ones. Apply a sealant on the threads and put them back in the openings found in the faucets.

Assemble and perform some tests.

Replace the inserts found in the handles and screw back the handles in place. After making sure that they are secure, turn on the water supply and turn on the faucet in order to perform some test. After turning the faucet on again, there should not be any leakage.

Even though the washers are a common cause of leaks on the faucet found in the bathtubs, there are other causes of the above. They include corrosion, cracks in the pipes and grout. They can cause a lot damage in the home if not replaced immediately. If you notice a leakage after replacing the washer, it is advisable to seek help from a professional.
